Krueger Scott Mansion – A Piece of Newark’s History

| NJ Museum, NJ Things, NJ Trivia, Places in NJ | March 11, 2013

The Krueger mansion holds a piece of Newark NJ history that is too precious to forget. The house has 6 story tower with balcony with 360 degree view of the city.  It was one of the first houses with an elevator, the largest house in Newark.

In the mid 90′s restoration plans were developed and started. However, due to cost overruns and waning interest the restoration process was halted after about 7 years.

The mansion was a monument of success for Gottfried Krueger, one of the big 5 beer brewers. He was a German immigrant who worked his way up from sweeping floors in his uncles brewery. The mansion had 3 stories 40 rooms and a brass domed stained glass obelisk, the home was extremely opulent.  The mansion was completed in 1889 and cost $250k, the most expensive home in the city.

The Krueger family moved out after World War I and the mansion was then sold to a construction company and then the Scottish Rite Masons. It has been said that Ed Koch once worked in the coatroom . They owned the mansion for nearly 30 years.

In 1958 the mansion was sold to Louise Scott Roundtree, the self-made millionairess owner of a black women’s beauty company.  The mansion was maintained very well by Ms. Scott . However, her heirs did not pay property taxes and the City of Newark took over the mansion in 1982.
